Shenzhen University Team Wins Dual Best Memorandum Nominations at 21st Willem C. Vis East Moot

The 21st Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot ("Vis East") was held in Hong Kong from March 10 to 17, 2024. The Shenzhen University team stood out among 144 teams from 33 countries and regions worldwide, earning an Honourable Mention for Best Memorandum on Behalf of Claimant and an Honourable Mention for Best Memorandum on Behalf of Respondent. The Shenzhen University team was the only team from China (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) to receive dual nominations for the best memorandum.

The Willem C. Vis Moot ("Vis Moot") is co-organized by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the University of Vienna, and other institutions. Held annually in Vienna, Austria, it has a 31-year history. Since 2003, the competition committee has also hosted the Willem C. Vis (East) Moot ("Vis East") in Hong Kong. This year's competition attracted 144 teams from 33 countries and regions worldwide, including teams from renowned universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore, the London School of Economics, and the University of Zurich.

Since the team was formed in September 2023, the Shenzhen University team has participated in three Vis Moot series competitions from 2023 to 2024: the 21st CIETAC Cup, the AIAC APAC Pre-Moot 2024, and the 21st Vis East Moot. The team's achievements are as follows:

  1. In the 21st CIETAC Cup International Commercial Arbitration Moot, the Shenzhen University team won the Third Prize, ranking 22nd out of 97 teams. Wu Xiling received the “Best Debater in Round Robin” award, and Zheng Yongwen was honored with the "Outstanding Team Contribution Award."

  2. In the AIAC APAC Pre-Moot 2024, the Shenzhen University team achieved a spot in the Global Top 16 out of 150 teams.

  3. In the 21st Willem C. Vis East Moot, the Shenzhen University team received Honourable Mentions for Best Memorandum on Behalf of Claimant and Best Memorandum on Behalf of Respondent, making them the only team from Chinese universities to receive dual nominations for the best memorandum.
